The fact that study after study has found that the same diet that can prevent and reverse one illness can also defend you and heal you from a whole list of others, indicates to me that a whole foods, plant-based diet truly is the healthiest diet available.

  1. How Not To Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease, by Michael Greger, MD, FACLM

I absolutely adore this book and Dr. Greger (he is the founder of In this book, he breaks down the top 15 health related killers in the United States and provides substantial and compelling research on how to not only prevent, but also treat and reverse chronic illnesses through a diet rich in whole, plant-based foods. Better yet, all of the proceeds from the book sales are given to charity. I finished this book in two nights because I simply could not put it down! This book truly is a must for anyone trying to radically transform their health.

2. The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Cambell II, MD

This books was actually my first introduction to the health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. It really opened my eyes to the fact that I had been misinformed for so long about proper, healthy nutrition. The book is based upon, and titled after, the most comprehensive study ever conducted comparing the effects of diet and disease. Dr. T. Colin Campbell and his team’s field data, combined with his laboratory data, provided shocking evidence that was arguably the catalyst for the rise in the evidence based, plant-based lifestyle movement.

3. Proteinoholics: How Our Obsession with Meat is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It, by Garth Davis, MD

I had been meaning to read this book for a while, and finally had the time to do so. It certainly did not disappoint! Dr. Garth Davis does an excellent job at providing background for why as a society we have shifted from eating with the intention of getting whole foods on our plates, to the present where we see foods as macronutrients, with protein (and more specifically animal protein) receiving super-star status. He breaks down why this shift has been dangerous to our health and our waistlines and answers the question of how much protein we actually need.
